I was taken to the southern general hospital when i was only seven years old in 1953. I was suffering with rheumatic fever, and i was in hospital for almost a year, i was never moved out of ward one, which was an adult male ward in those days, visiting was very strict, and the times were ruled by a handbell at the start and end of each visit, anyone under fourteen was not allowed to visit, so i never seen most of my brothers and sisters, apart from at week-end when they would stand outside the large windows of the ward, and wave to me. the nurses were never done working, making beds, bedpans, medicines etc, they were all wonderful lassies, and spoilt me rotten, the matron was a real disciplinarian of a lady, who ran a very efficient ward, which was a credit to her i suppose, with so many ill and dying men on the ward, my mother never missed a visit, god bless her, I remember just once when she missed her tram, she did not get to the ward unil the last five minutes of visiting time, and believe me there was no concessions in those days, under any circumstances, to say the laest i was heartbroken, thinking my mum had forgorren me, and my dear wee mother was just as upset, she had to travel from cornwall street, just off the paisley road, and she had another seven children besides me to take care of, if ever there was an angel it was my dear mother, emmie brennan who apart for being late just that once never missed a visit, or failed to bring me some toy or other, for almost a year of my hospital stay. .
