"Dreadful Vegetarian Food"

A review of Cafe Mao by Laurie written on Saturday 29th of September 2007

Both myself and my girlfriend are vegetarian and having heard a few folk tell us Cafe Mao is "funky, hip and cool ..asian fusion" etc we went along.

It looks ok, seems bright, busy and chatty - all the good things i like in atmosphere terms.

The starters were fine and well presented, but it was both the main dishes that were awful. The Thai yellow vegetable curry was a confused unpalatable mess - it tasted as if the chef had chucked every spice in his rack into it, creating a fiery dish that tasted of curry powder.

The Shiitake Udon noodles were little better - it was a crime to call it "shiitake mushrooms" because there was only 2-3 of them in the dish.

The waiter asked if "we weren't hungry, and wished to take a doggy bag home" and i said "the curry was far to hot, inedible" to which he replied, "oh, thats a shame" and collected the plates.

I'm sure this place is successful at what it does best - chicken/beef dishes - but if you are vegetarian i'd stay well clear..
