The pre-apprenticeship course of one year at Stow was great to learn what engineer type you wanted to become. The teachers Mr Stenhouse science,Mr Shields Tech. Drawing,Mr Curry english, the ones I remember all knew their subject. Mr Curry gave you a choice if you misbehaved. Choice was pages of lines (or a whack over the backside with the blackboard ruler which he called AVI. It kept all behaving. Boys I remember James Paterson (played international schoolboys football) John Russell,James Middleton, Jim Melrose, Tommy Pollok.

I achieved my Third Tear Leaving certificate and the Stow College certificate for practical and theory in engineering. With a commendation for Fitting. I went on to become a Marine Engineer with Brocklebank then a design engineer ashore.

Hope someone is still out there.
