The evacuation occured due to an unexploded bomb from aGerman aircraft penetrating the funnel of the battle cruiser HMS Sussex berthed at nearby Princes Dock the situation was made even more dangerous since she had just been rearmed with a full magazine and ready to go to sea.Needless to say had the bomb gone off the whole area would have been devastated including St Gerards little was published in the Press for security reasons at the time.Firefighters boarded one of the vehicular ferries and pumped water into the ship to put out a fire in the engine room what brave characters they were!! I was a pupil in my first year and of course didn't fully appreciate the gravity of the situation until sometime later.Full details can be foundon the ships web site..
