"Chasing the Bismark"

A review of Cardonald Cemetery by Gill Southwell - Saturday 29th of May 2010

My uncle John Palmer served on HMS Maori during WW2. He was injured during the operation to sink the Bismark, brought to a hospital in Glasgow and buried in Cardonald Cemetery. His wife, my Aunty Kath, had difficulty finding out which city he was in and finally reached the hospital just as he died - she was moments too late. She lived in married quarters at plymouth at the time - I have no idea why he was not 'brought home'.
I was unaware of his resting place until I started looking into family history - she brought up her one son alone, and never remarried. Sadly, both she and her son are now dead - but he has 2 children in Canada, and I hope to take a picture of his grave later this year (2010) and send it to them.
