"Mr Donald was the man!"
A review of Elder Park Primary School by Jim Bermingham - Sunday 29th of June 2008
I went to Elder Park from 1965 to 1972. Miss Bremner was of course the Headmistress. Miss Gray was always everyones favourite first teacher then you got Mrs Summerville. I was lucky to have her Daughter Barbara in my class so I think that she felt obliged to be nice to everyone! Reality check if you got Mrs McLashan although for some reason, I don't think I did. I can't recall who else I had before Miss Burden around P5 then the teacher of all teachers - Mr Donald in P6/7 He was truly amazing. Used to take us everywhere at weekends. Believe it or not in those days this really happened - fishing at Gourock and hillwalking in the Campsies. There were probably loads of other places I didn't go to but he was so good a teacher and taught me a lot. He also taught Alan Hooper a lot too when he found him carving his initials on the desk with scissors, chased him round the room and of course gave him the belt once he caught him. I remember too the dinner hall when you queued up before going up the death defying stairs into it where Mrs Binnie and her staff filled our bellies with the dish of the day. Caramel shortcake was always brilliant. I remember the toilet blocks being built and the old toilets being based at the far end of the playground. Of course, this was perfect for all the "big boys" to go for a smoke. In those days the playgrounds were segregated with the boys in the Hutton Drive one and the girls in Kennedar Drive, and the wee door between them was sometimes left open. (but not very often!) Aye, those were the days.
