"Memories of the "Sufferin' General""
A review of Southern General Hospital by Marie Hyland - Tuesday 11th of March 2008
I found this site inadvertently, and was most interested in the reviews, two of them in particular! I trained at SGH in 50s and well remember Ward 1, and the disciplinarian Matron mentioned. Jeannie Jolly was a charismatic figure, and ruled the hospital with her own particular brand of discipline. Had c. difficile, MRSA or any of the present day bugs had their high profile in those days, NONe, but none would have dared to set foot in SGH! I had an excellent training there, and in 1971 was cared for in the Neurological Unit, since I was clever enough to have my Berry Aneurysm leak while I was back visiting Glasgow! Neuro-surgery not withstanding, I was back at work, in England, as a District Midwife within 6 months! Good old "Sufferin' General"......happy days.
